About US Time Zones
The United States uses a standardized time zone system that was established over a century ago. Here's what you need to know:
- Eastern Time (ET) - Used by major cities like New York, Miami, and Washington D.C. UTC-5 in winter, UTC-4 in summer.
- Central Time (CT) - Covers Chicago, Houston, and Dallas. One hour behind Eastern Time.
- Mountain Time (MT) - Includes Denver, Salt Lake City, and parts of the Southwest. Note: Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round.
- Pacific Time (PT) - The West Coast zone for Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. UTC-8 in winter, UTC-7 in summer.
- Alaska Time (AKT) - Alaska operates on its own time zone, one hour behind Pacific Time.
- Hawaii-Aleutian Time (HT) - Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and remains on UTC-10 year-round.
Daylight Saving Time in the US
Most of the United States observes Daylight Saving Time (DST), which means clocks "spring forward" one hour in March and "fall back" in November. This system was designed to make better use of daylight during the longer days of summer.
DST Schedule: Begins on the second Sunday in March at 2:00 AM and ends on the first Sunday in November at 2:00 AM.
Exceptions: Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe DST and remain on standard time throughout the year.
